Currently, BHS allows no smoking in any part of the school, but does let students smoke in front of the school on the sidewalk. What can parents do to counteract the impression that smoking at BHS is pervasive?

I think seeing all the kids smoking in front of the school gives the practice an unintended validation and certainly a great deal of visibility. I'd like to see the practice banned, forcing student smokers much further away from the school and out of sight.

I think parents need to reinforce with their kids that smoking is dangerous, addictive, and NOT cool. More kids don't smoke than do smoke, so they shouldn't submit to peer pressure.

Join us for a special power breakfast "Coffee and Converstion: Teens and Tobacco," Thursday Nov. 5th, 7:45 to 9:30 am in the MLK rm at BHS. Parents, students, counselors, school staff and public health professionals will come together to clarify the issues and brainstorm ideas to address teen smoking.

I have never understood why we allow students to smoke outside the school, when they are not old enough to purchase.

If it is illegal for kids to purchase cigarettes why is it allowed on public property?

Do people think that letters to school committee members would be useful? Having kids smoke outside the entrance to the high school really doesn't make sense. I think if they were even moved out of sight, out of mind, that would prevent some kids from ever starting. And if they're moved to some cold, uncomfortable, distant spot, maybe they'd even want to cut back or quit.
