When kids say they’re going to “hang out” in Brookline, what are some of the hotspots? And what do those places imply? What could be happening? And what kind of limitations should parents impose?

This is where parents/families and guardians need to feel more empowered to ask specific questions about "hanging out". Questions can sometimes lead to conflict, which is often why they do not get asked. I would suggest to start with issues which lead to minor conflicts, to get practice, and to see how you respond before you take on the biggies! Knowing how one responds to conflict helps one figure out how to question "hanging out".

At a recent PTO presentation for freshman parents, one asked about hanging out in Coolidge Corner. Here's what Mary Minott and a trio of BHS student Peer Leaders had to say: What goes on at Coolidge Corner?
A: The restaurants and shops around Coolidge Corner are fine, but people should stay away from the back of Devotion School, also known as Devo Park, where kids smoke and drink. Mary Minott adds that 2 weeks ago, a BHS student was hospitalized for alcohol poisoning after being at Devo Park Playground at night. The Brookline police have increased patrols in that area to every 30 minutes.
