WHat 10th grade parents need to know

On November 17 at 7 p.m. in the MLK Room of BHS, B-PEN/PTO presented parenting expert Jon Cohan (CADC) discussing “What Sophomore Parents Need to Know.” With more than 13 years of professional experience working with adolescents and families, he shared guidance, communication tips, and strategies to help parents and caregivers better understand and support the well-being and healthy decision-making of their 10th graders as they navigate life at BHS. Parents also had the opportunity for lively discussion regarding thoughts on reasonable limits (curfews, bed times, phone use, etc.) and expectations regarding substances, all of which can vary widely in our very diverse school community.

Cohan's Key Takeaways Include

  • The teen brain is still developing, which leads to intense feelings and impulsive decisions. Guardrails (limits) are important. Model the behavior you want to see.
  • Communication is key for building trust and compliance – “relationship before rules.” It works best when it is calm and consistent. Press pause if it gets too heated and revisit later. Avoid interrogating, but rather lead with curiosity, validation (“I understand how you could feel that way…”) and connection.
  • Have early and frequent conversations about substance use and risky behaviors. Prioritize safety and be factual, rather than fear-based. Set consistent and realistic boundaries and expectations.
  • Reach out for help when you need it.
